Evolved Mental Health

Evolved Mental Health (EMH) takes an integrative and holistic approach to mental health treatment, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the body, mind, environment, and spirit. This approach recognizes that mental and physical well-being are closely linked, and it considers various modalities and techniques to address the unique needs and preferences of each client.

Integrative psychiatry often involves combining conventional psychiatric treatments with complementary and alternative therapies. This could include a range of interventions such as psychotherapy, medication management, lifestyle changes, nutritional support, mindfulness practices, and more. By taking a comprehensive view of mental health and considering the individual as a whole, McKenize aims to create personalized treatment plans that go beyond the limitations of specialization. This always involves a thorough assessment of the client's mental, emotional, and physical health, as well as an exploration of their preferences and values.

It's worth noting that integrative psychiatry aligns with a growing trend in healthcare that recognizes the importance of addressing the root causes of mental health issues and promoting overall well-being. This approach may resonate with individuals seeking a more comprehensive and personalized approach to mental health care.

A Unique Approach

THOROUGH INITIAL ASSESSMENT

Prior to the assessment you will fill out and return a comprehensive intake questionnaire a minimum of one week before this first appointment. The initial appointment lasts approximately 1.5 hours and is used to look at all of the confluences of factors contributing to what brings you to the appointment. This is where you share your story. McKenzie wants to know what you are struggling with, your health history, what is important to you, what you are looking for now and what you are looking for long term. We will start the development of your integrated and personalized plan at the very first appointment.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Therapy is integral to psychiatry and a psychotherapeutic approach is integrated in every session. McKenzie does offer individual psychotherapy services and is practiced in a range of modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, positive psychology, interpersonal family systems and inner child work. McKenzie is most passionate about somatic psychotherapy, a body based therapy to help you heal on a cellular level. If you are established with a therapist, McKenzie is happy to collaborate as indicated.

MEDICATION  MANAGEMENT

Medications play an integral role in traditional psychiatry, and at EMH, they are given careful consideration within the framework of a broader, more integrated approach. If medications can be beneficial, we will explore all available options together. We'll engage in a thorough discussion of the pros and cons, and you will be supported in making an informed decision that aligns with your preferences and values.

REDUCING OR TAPERING OFF MEDICATIONS

If you're looking for support to simplify your medication regimen, reduce a dose, or stop medications altogether, McKenzie is happy to help. If she believes it is not in your best interest, she will explain why. McKenzie aims to support your medical autonomy and offers alternative approaches that can decrease the need for medications. With that said, psychotropics are powerful medications and often take a great deal of attendance tapering off.  McKenzie is comfortable and honored to hold space and medical guidance to support your goals.

MIND-BODY PRACTICES

In today's fast-paced world, many of us find ourselves in a constant state of stress, caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. The fight, flight, or freeze response becomes a familiar companion. That's where mind-body practices come in as our superheroes, helping us reconnect with our bodies and find the much-needed rest and restoration. These practices range from intentional movement, energy work, and dance to journaling, meditation, somatic work, sound therapy, breath work, emotional freedom technique (EFT), and various forms of resourcing, grounding, and guided imagery. McKenzie lives for this stuff!

LAB STUDIES

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to lab tests; they are ordered with your specific needs in mind. These tests are tailored to gather relevant information for your situation, such as medication monitoring, genetic testing, or functional assessments. Functional tests cover areas like vitamin or mineral imbalances, bacterial or fungal dysbiosis, mold exposure, heavy metals, gastrointestinal health, inflammatory markers, or environmental stressors. In some cases, electrocardiograms may be indicated.

BOTANICALS AND SUPPLEMENTS

The nutraceutical industry is exploding and the multitude of options can be overwhelming to navigate. Yet, it's important to acknowledge that safe and thoughtful supplementation has been part of human health practices for centuries. Today, a growing body of evidence supports the use of supplements, ranging from essential vitamins and minerals to herbal extracts. When approached wisely, supplements can serve as valuable tools in promoting overall well-being.

GETTING BACK TO BASICS TO PULL IT ALL TOGETHER

In today's fast-paced world, we often seek complex solutions to our challenges. It's almost second nature to battle against our bodies instead of tuning in to them. What if the anxiety or depression we label as psychiatric conditions is, in part, a result of malnourishment, lack of activity, isolation, or years of insufficient sleep? McKenzie provides practical assessments and guidance on movement, nutrition, and sleep, aiming to foster a more attuned connection with your mind, body, and spirit.
