Integrative Psychiatry

 BUT WHO AM I REALLY?

At my core, I value meaningful conversations and genuine connections. I am an individual who continually seeks a deeper understanding of life and takes joy in continuous learning.

I have a passion for reading, delving into a wide array of subjects—from physics to the intricacies of the gut microbiome. However, my guilty pleasure lies in sappy romance novels and the occasional Hallmark film. I collect old medical and psychology texts, nurturing a dream of having my own library one day.

Born and raised in Southern Oregon, I am now raising my family here. I believe you'd be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful place to live. Summers, in particular, hold a special place in my heart as I savor the beauty of our Rogue River.

  HOW DID I GET INTO
INTEGRATIVE PSYCHIATRY?

The path into psychiatry let alone integrative psychiatry unfolded organically for me, shaped more by intuition than conscious intent. The unexpected catalyst was a debilitating back injury. Without this pivotal moment, I might still be deeply immersed in the world of acute care medicine, which was my initial passion and calling.

Following my back injury, I had a unique opportunity to reassess my core values and contemplate my next steps. Psychiatry emerged as a potential career that I felt genuinely connected to. Four years later, just before graduation, a significant exploration into The STAR*D trial, a seminal antidepressant study, shocked me with its results. This pivotal moment shifted my focus to understanding psychotropic medications, leading me to scrutinize the financial and scientific aspects that didn't align. It was eye-opening to find a lack of definitive science supporting the notion that depression is primarily a serotonin deficiency.

Consciously aligning my values with a more holistic and comprehensive approach to mental health, I committed to exploring alternative and complementary methods. This journey into integrative psychiatry became a purposeful fusion of personal values, professional growth, and a dedication to redefining mental health care.

This journey opened the gates to a new world of knowledge. I am now empowered by the deep understanding that each of us constitutes an entire universe shaped by relationships, experiences, stressors, environments, and the internal landscapes of our bodies—forged through choices made consciously and unconsciously. These micro and macro experiences influence our cells, gene expression, and vitality. Our body keeps the score, and the key to the answers lies in moving beyond fear into curiosity. Embracing this shift allows us to recognize that our body's responses and symptoms are its own way of navigating the intricate and unique pathways of its functioning.
